Initiates of Sophian tradition and masters of the Kabbalah experience God as Ain Sof, Infinite Light. Ain Sof is pure Divine Being, beyond gender, and yet the principle of gender exists within God, for gender comes into being through the act of creation and, in the experience of the Divine, we find both feminine and masculine qualities. Thus, we may speak of God as Father and as Mother.
The Living Father (Logos, or word) represents the transcendent aspect of God. The Divine Mother (Sophia, or wisdom) represents the immanent aspect of God; as one Divine Being, the masculine and feminine aspects of the Divine are inseparable from one another -- the Holy One of Being.
Sophians believe that when Mother Mary, as a divine personification of the Divine Mother, gave birth to Jesus, she gave birth to Logos. His union with Mary Magdalene represents the union of Logos and Sophia, or the Christos that will liberate humanity if, as individuals, we are willing to recognize the potential that lies within each one of us.
